Omegas and Depression - 2001-06-15

Dear Egg Buyer,

Dr. Rudin, Omegas & Depression
When I first started The Country Hen, a nutritional consultant, Dr. Miles Robinson, gave me a book called ''The Omega-3 Phenomenon'' by Dr. Donald Rudin, Clara Felix and Constance Schrader. It was first published in 1988. Dr. Rudin was evidently the first person to discover that Omega-3 in linseed oil can give great relief to those with schizophrenia, depression, and manic depression. I read the book but did not pay too much attention to Rudin's finding.

Dr. Stoll & Manic Depression
In 1996, a medical doctor and psychiatrist, Dr. Andrew Stoll, unaware of Dr. Rudin's work, began a test with fish oil on patients having manic depression. Fish oils contain two Omega-3 Fatty Acids called DHA and EPA. The linseed oil also contains Omega-3 oil, but it is a different variety ALA. Dr. Stoll's use of controlled study was very successful. He describes his work in his new book ''The Omega-3 Connection'' published by Simon & Schuster.

Dr. Andrew Stoll & A Friend
Recently, a close friend was suddenly struck down by manic depression. I called Dr. Stoll, since I had contacted him earlier to obtain a copy of his study. Dr. Stoll was kind enough to give special attention to my friend. At this time, I would like to repay his help and help him recruit volunteers for new studies. Therefore, I enclose the following request exactly as it has been presented to me by Dr. Stoll:
